Enki

Description

The Enki stand at around 4ft tall, and look like much smaller humans. Other than their size, there is very little that distinguishes them from their much taller cousins, other than perhaps a long pointing of the ear, which the Enki often hide in long hair, or with hats or headbands. Enki can be born to humans, and two Enki may produce a human. Over the centuries, the Enki have gathered together in communities, and have claimed this name for themselves.

Unlike their human cousins, the Enki appear to have a raft of natural abilities. Some are able to see as the Elves do in low light, some are able to feel the ebb and flow of nature, some are more attuned to the arcane than humans. These anomolies brought them to the attention of the Mage Collages, which meant that many of them were used for experimentation. This led to the Enki being very guarded about what their abilities might be.

There is still much suspicion around the Enki, with folklore from the Wild Times still being very much part of the knowledge of the Country Folk.

Despite this, the Enki do not suffer from the ostracism of the Strygath.

The Enki do have a reputation for having fiery tempers, but many of them strive to keep such a temper in check. Most Enki will not act on their anger.

History

The Enki have been attested too since the Wild Times, and were thought to be the source of the tales of changeling children, as they were born to two human parents. Over the centuries, the Enki have gathered themselves together in small villages and townships, and formed their own community.

The Secret

The Enki have a secret. From puberty, the Enki begin exhibiting some strange racial traits. They grown horns, often from the top of their heads, and some even grow tails. Their teeth can grow out to points, as well as their ears, and tufts of hair grow on the tops of their ears. During the Wild Times the Enki would natural grow these features, and be proud of them. However, during the years preceding the Darkness War, great suspicion fell on their demon-like appearance, especially as it seemed that they were much more attuned to the arcane action of the darkness. They were considered the natural alies of the Obsidian Horde, and hunted because of it.

The Enki hid, but found that their appearance was not just for show. They found that they did, indeed, have an arcane connection, but it was not to the darkness itself, but to something else, equally as sinister. Investigations into their births suggested that one or other of their parents had had meetings of something monstrous in the weeks following their conception, with some mothers confessing that they had had relations with monstrous creatures who had seduced them, and fathers who had no recollection of the month in which the Enki were conceived.

The time during, and following the Darkness War was a time of fear and suspicion. Anything that looked monsterous, or could be considered to be on the side of the Obsidian Horde was pressed into slavery. To avoid extinction, the Enki hid. They cut off their horns, hid their ears under long hair, strapped their tails down. Shaved their ears. Enki were dispatched to each town, to look for other Enki being born.

The Enki have worked hard to allay the fears of the other races. They now offer gifts to any humans who's offspring are Enki, and befriend them. This means that they are able to warn the young Enki of their particular nature.

The Enki are taught to avoid anger, as such anger can cause their secret traits to grow at a faster rate, which can be problematic if the Enki has been lax in self-grooming.

Despite the difficulties posed by their nature, the Enki do not, by and large, think of it as a curse, more of an inconvenience. They tell of a time when balance will return and they will once again be able to reveal themselves for who they are. The stories of what this future time will be vary, but generally they speak of acceptance, and harmony. All, that is, except one story. One story which is frowned upon, and not transmitted, and yet everyone knows it. It is whispered to young Enki by other young Enki. It is a tale whereby the Enki subjugate the world. Where the future holds a world dominated by the Enki who have become bestial. For most Enki, this is not a future of the world they wish for, it is a nightmare they strive to avoid.
